What is “Super Stubby”?
We’ve increased the versatility of our standard HPS-1000, high pressure sodium, lighting system, by mounting its light-head assembly to a short “stubby” platform and attaching two motorized positioning devices to its reflector. In this configuration, the light-head and reflector can be remotely positioned or adjusted via a remote control unit.
Nicknamed “Super Stubby”, this modified version of the HPS-1000 incorporates the same 1000 watt, high pressure sodium bulb as the standard HPS-1000, spent fuel pool light. For the same power input HPS bulbs provide eight times the light output (140,000 lumens) of conventional incandescent bulbs, and last an average ten times longer!
Intrinsic to the design of the light’s bulb assembly is a patented, outer quartz envelope, which has received universal acceptance by all of the major fuel manufacturers. The envelope acts as a protective thermal barrier that will not crack if the operating lamp is immersed in water. This allows “Super Stubby” to be used both in air, underwater and during wet/dry operations. “Super Stubby” provides optimum illumination for many refuelling operations including disassembly of upper internals, head lift, general cavity lighting, and core reload. “Super Stubby” can also be used for remote viewing operations when equipped with a radiation tolerant camera.
